How to date a deck of playing cards


How old is your deck?

The following material, designed to assist collectors to date their decks, is produced here with the kind permission of the 52 Poker Organization.
It was first featured in an article, who was curator at the Play Card Museum in in their quarterly awareness 'CLEAR THE DECKS' in April 1991.

Find your ace of spades

Like your grade to investigate cards, a dating aid can be very useful. For a deck manufactured by Play Co., a dating code was placed on Ace Spades at the time of manufacture. The code was first used in 1904 and only applies to Aces of Spades with a letter pla four-digit number. Collectors have no meaning with fewer numbers for collectors.
From the beginning in 1904, the same codes were used by subsidiaries of the National Playing Card and. Andrew Dougherty and Playing Card Co. these codes also, as they were part of USPC in 1907 and 1929 respectively.

Narrowing down dates

As you will see, you are given a range of dates. You must now use your reasoning and deduction powers to reduce your choices to one date.
For example, we know that Casino opened in 1964, so these cards were not printed in 1909, 1930 or 1950. In addition, if you look at deck box, you will see that it is a Playing card perforated label. These types of labels were used roughly between 1965 and 1975. Therefore, 1990 and 2010 are out of date. That leaves 1970, and that is the year that these cards were printed.

Other playing card dating notes:

5. The letter H was also occasionally used in 2013.
